On May 4th, we observe two minutes of silence in the Netherlands. We commemorate the victims of the Second World War and all those who have died in war situations since then. It is a moment of collective reflection, rooted in the promise: never again.
But while we seek silence, that same silence in Gaza is being shattered by the thunder of bombardments.
It is painful to commemorate the past while we are witnessing live what UN experts and aid organizations describe as a genocide. The figures are staggering: more than 75,000 people killed in Gaza, including more than 22,800 children. Despite a ceasefire, innocent lives are destroyed every day by Israeli aggression.
I ask your readers, during this remembrance day, not only to look back, but also to look around them at what is happening in the world today. For example, by joining Be Human Community and showing solidarity with the most vulnerable in the refugee camps in Gaza.
